So I'm browsing the crown vic forum.  A guy set up a camshaft profiling rig to measure the various 4.6L modular camshafts.  At one point he makes a comment '...this is why new chains shouldnt be used when rebuilding but yea...'  regarding degreeing cams.

First I've ever heard of used chains preferred over new.  Anyone else? Woody?

His reply when I questioned was that new chains stretch.  Not sure why he thinks old ones don't...

Taking up the slack from stretching is what tensioners are for.  No tensioner + old chain = erratic valve events and spark timing on distributor equipped engines.

Also, chains can break.  When I rebuild my modular junk, I'm using new chains.

More than likely he is referring to cam degree you setup with a new chain and it changes as the chain stretches and old chain probably won't change as much. But I agree put new chains, guides, and tensioners.

Any new chain stretches, the big dollar chains stretch less. As for the used chain, always use new on the rebuild and don't get cheap.
