I'm aware of the Cleveland main bearing diam. difference and thrust width difference versus the 351W OEM block but was wondering if the crank snout is different between the two engines?
  With the proper main bearing spacers in  the Windsor block would a Cleveland crank go into the Windsor and still allow use of the Windsor balancer,etc.Are there any other dimensional differences that would be a problem,also would need to use the std. dimension Windsor rods.
  We're trying to get a 2.750" main, std. stroke crank for our dirt track car.Would machining the Windsor 3" mains down to fit the small Cleveland main journal be nuts or what?We actually did this with an Eagle cast 3.850" stroker crank had it cryogenically treated and it worked fine.

You need to machine the front for the timing gear location relative to block and cam gear.  I believe arount .375 more or less and then need to cut for another key as then the original key doesn't go back far enough to catch the chain gear.  The snout might be too long then, need shorter bolt so as to not bottom out in bolt hole.  C and W rod bearings have a different thickness/outside dimension so be careful of which bearings you need and what rods to use.

Years ago built an SVO block and welded/offset ground C crank and had to machine the front as described above.  When you get done install both gears without the chain and using a straight edge make sure they align.
