I don't know where to put this question so I hope I'm in the right place. I have searched for a answer for days.
I just got a 1984 F150 with a 300 I6 and 4 speed trans. It's 4 wheel drive with 37" tires and 4:88 gears. The truck engine and trans are all stock except the feed back carb has been replaced with a non feed back Carter YF 1 barrel carb and proper distributor.
The truck runs like a champ except when the engine is under a load it seems like you turn the ign switch off or running out of gas. I can't hear the engine over the tire roar.
It seems to only have the problem in high gear. Example, going up a slight incline in 4th gear and barely dip into throttle to maintain speed it falls on it's face, but if you let off throttle slightly it picks back up.
I have checked the ign timing and replaced the fuel filter.
Does this sound like a carb problem or a lack of fuel?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it.... sounds like the pump is dying.

I read a article about metering rod adjustment yesterday, but it didn't help. The carb is clean and leak free. I'll pick up a fuel pump and gauge and see if that helps.

When I was a tech, I had a couple of engines that would loose spark at wide open throttle or high loads.  Turns out when the vacuum advance would move the pickup in the distrubutor a wire was broken and it lost contact.  As soon as the vacuum advance would start to move back it would make contact again.   It happened to me on 2 or 3 engine.  One was a 300 ford the other was an hei distributor.  Just a though....try moving the vacuum advance while it is running see if it finds a dead spot.

..they are indestructible!

I always thought a blow thru turbo on these would be cool!
