having had 28 spline aftermarket axles in my aussie xc falcon and snapping them with no slicks, and a manual valve body auto with a stall iv stepped up to billet 31splines and have not had any issues at all,
im guessing youd be putting out more power than me ( mines a ported cast iron 2v factory headed cleveland) but my car is very heavy (at a guess 3750lb or more) on 275/60 tires.

in short even if its purely for peace of mind go the 31 splines... i wish i did the first time round.

I figured the carrier would work, but couldn't remember if the tone ring was on the shafts or carriers in the Exploders.

We've been talking about it and he's decided to save up more money and get  the 31 spline axles for it.

I agree that he is now on the right path.

I broke one stock 28spline axle in my 86 street racing in the Chicago suburbs.  I had a 70mm Throttle Body, GT40 intake, headers/exhaust, 4.10 gears and a shortbelt.

The Explorer speedometer ring went on in 1998, before that it's a trans electrical sensor.  I've got a whole 93 spare rear with 3L73 gears. Plus a 98 open 3.73 rear, discs.

If he has to buy a new carrier, I would go even larger than 31s. When I bought my axles from Moser, there wasn't a price difference between 28, 31, 33, and 35 spline axles. If he finds a deal on a carrier, thats another story.

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/STR-N1867/

There are also 33 spline lockers available.

If the axles are the same price, its not a bad idea to spend a little more on a quality diff that you won't have to worry about.

I've seen 11 second cars break 31 spline axles on drag radials and others run low 10s on 28s.

If I remember correctly, FRPP sells a 31 spline traction lock carrier.... or you can get one out of a F150 8.8....  I dont know what the length  the exploder rear end is, so i have no idea there. I do know you have a bit of spline to play with on either rear axle tho, but IDK if its enough to be able to fit. Maybe take a tape measure to the junk yard?

Not that it's really relevant to this conversation, but earlier Explorers also had the same tone ring, for ABS. It was used for the speedometer for '99-'01. I haven't kept up with the IRS after that.

As mentioned earlier, F150s are another good source for 31 spline Traction Loks to rebuild. All the F150 8.8s were 31 spline, I believe.
