This is what I have found.

Boss block D1ZE-A or D1ZE-B

2 Bolt (1970 -71)
  D0AE-A
  D0AE-C
  D0AE-E
  D0AE-G
  D0AE-L
  D0AE-J  (1970)
...

The BOSS Redistry shows a  D0AE L as a correct 4 bolt Boss block

That doesn't make sense because the Boss 351 came out in 71 not 70.  But I guess it could be

It's shown as a Boss block but I don't see the main caps. It's hard to make out the casting date. Is that 0D11 or 0G11?

From the FAQs, they didn't know when the first car was built. The earliest "date invoiced" on a build sheet of a Boss 351 is 11/5/70. (3 cars).

From the Cleveland forum. I started a thread over there to get some feed back on this. One of the responses here:

So I think there is some mystery to the casting numbers.

Are you wanting
"BOSS" information confirmed or just 4 bolt main block info?
Do you know if all 4 bolt main blocks had them on all 5 main caps?

Yes Boss, 4 bolt, and 2 bolt. As far as I know all 4 bolt blocks were on the 5 mains. I suspect that if you find 4 bolt on less than 5 mains it would be a reworked 2 bolt block.

My name is Chris and I am new to this blog but I also have a 351 cleveland with casting numbers D0AE-J with a build date of 9m15 and it is a 4 bolt main. I am not sure if my heads are original but they are the D0AE-N Quench head with 10.7 to 1 compression ratio. The guy I bought the engine from was a Chevy guy but his engine mechanic was also miffed about the 4bolt main and speculated it was a boss block. I talked with a local (old salt) and he said it would have the screw in type freeze plugs which it doesnt have so I too am confused as to what is up with this block. I suppose the 4 bolt main caps could have been added after the block /car was purchesed but after reading this blog, I am not sure. Anyone else have any data to support any of this?

I believe only Boss 302 blocks had screw in freeze plugs.  I don't know off any cleveland blocks that had them.

The Earliest Date code you will find a for a stock engine would be April 1970 that would be" D "
All  boss blocks that were installed in cars were DOAE  the nest casting was D2ae this is one year after the cars were built .  No boss 351 had screw in freeze plugs and the two bolt  blocks were no weeker than the boss blocks .  We were told for a matching numbers block it needed to be with in 6 weeks of the build date of the car. The D1ZE-a or D1ZE-B was a part number stamped into the blocks a long with the build date.  some people confuse this with the casting number.
