does anyone know what the lift and duration of a stock 289 cam is?
how is the lift measured?

I don't know.   I previously ran a reproduction of the old 289 Hi Po / K code grind which was 228* duration at .050" lift and .477" lift with 1.6 rockers at the valve.  I would think most of the lift numbers take into account a 1.6 (stock) rocker arm ratio.  Lobe and valve lift are different.  Valve lift takes into account the rocker arm ratio.

Got this info from searhcing on the net

Stock 289/302 (65-72) cam shaft specs are:
Part Number C3AZ-6250-V
Application: 65-66 289, 68-72 302
Lifter: Hydraulic
Intake events: open 16* BTC, 40* ATC; close 70* ABC, 8* ABC Exhaust events: open 44* BBC, 1* BBC; close 20* ATC, 27* BTC
Duration: 266*/244* I/E
Lobe lift: 0.230"/0.237" I/E (lobe), 0.360"/0.80" I/E (valve)
Overlap: 36*
Mark: UA (between last lobe and journal)

Ugly?  Easy now -- that's my baby and it's got lots of unique character!  When I drop that built 445" stroker in it you won't have any time to "pull over to let me pass" because I'll have already blown past you when you figure out what the hell was that loud noise behind you . . .
