Title: EFI related question
Post by: 1970_347 on November 20, 2017, 11:29:23 am
Would i be better off modifying a factory explorer harness or buying aftermarket to get the engine trans combo to work in my 70 mustang?

I am buying a running driving 2wd 302 explorer and taking ANYTHING that might be useful in the swap.

(the 347 long block is going to stay, all the rest of the crap is coming off the exploder engine)

I'd say that a Mustang harness and computer would be a better starting place.

Depends on the year of the explorer.

If it has a distributor, mustang stuff is a better place to start.

If it's EDIS, you need the explorer stuff if you're planning to keep it distributorless and you want it to be plug & play.  If you don't mind doing some custom wiring, the mustang ecu and harness is the better choice.

the Explorer can be tuned with EFI live or another tuning software,
all the fox computers are OBDI aren't they?

The Explorer harness may be a good choice. If you are using the 4r70w, the Ex ecu will control it.
Almost all connections you want from the engine harness are in the single 42-pin connector. (power, ground, all gauges, etc.)
If it's later than 1997, the PATS system can be disablef in the ECU.

Haven't bought one yet, yes with the 4R70W.
looks like I am going for a 1996.

The car is still 420 miles away from me, with 7 or 8 projects ahead of it. Still planning right now.

But EFI, auto w O/D, power 4 wheel disc and A/C.

Along with fresh body/paint and new factory style upholstery. Going to make for a great summer cruiser.
