Ok, this saga may take a minute so bear with me........................

I've known Micheal for some years through racing at the track but only in the last couple have we started "hanging" out, he's a AOD guy but loves to TNT the track and has a blasted apart procharged coupe that is in terminal "project" mode, by all accounts it should grace the track around 2018 at the rate he's going but thats not what got this thing started and not what you're here to read about...it's that black heap posted above.

How and why did a " I LOVE coupes" guy end up with a GT hatch? Bad luck lol............Micheals trips to the track and watching me beat the crap out of the gears prompted him to start jonesing for a little push-n-pull action so the craigslist site got burned down with the hunt for a suitable "stick shift" car to race and get in on the fun with..........no luck, so EBay got involved as well as local internet etc........nothing really popped out till the GT was found on fleabay, not *really* what he wanted but it had what seemed to be a decent foundation to  work from, besides the seller claimed he had been building it for NMRA FS so it had to be fast........right?

Mike: "I found a car!"
Me: "Cool!"
Mike: "Its in kentucky and its a GT and its black.....Ronda says it looks sinister and the guy was gonna race factory stock with it!"

Me: "Kentucky? damn thats a hella long pull..........lets go get it!"

A week or so later and 3 hours sleep the night before i'm standing in kentucky looking at a "Factory Stock" car that Tommy Godfrey would have SLAYED in the first round but the car drove decent and seemed to make good power and all the right noises and we were'nt going back empty handed by god!

Micheal also only chose to stop for lunch and i almost starved to death on that trip! I snuck into the store on a gas stop and got a apple pie, the only thing that saved my life! I came over a few days later and we started fixing all the screwed up stuff and finding out we knew more about factory stock than this guy based on the car lol..............but it still hadnt hit the track and we had to wait a few days before its maiden voyage which i'll chronicle in my next post...................... :burnout

"Time Slip:
60ft: 1.56
300ft:
1/8th ET: 7.49
1/8th MPH: 90.5"

With the engine that was listed those track times are almost too hard to believe ...  considering my Merc's times which only weighs 800 pounds more!

Well we got the GT up to Panama City Dragway 1/8th. miler at the end of august and figured we'd get it shook down nice and proper, being its Micheals first stick "race" car he elected to ferry it up there on a stretcher :loser..........the real men drove their stuff 130+ miles but i let him slide this time.......

Micheal had purchased some strange shocks and struts to try and help the cause on its maiden track voyage but we really needed the driver to get tuned up! :Gluck:

The car had a set of M/T 275/50 drag radials on it and Micheal struggled to get a consistent launch and try and get the shift light/clutch/shift handle combo working in sync..........he threw some scattershot timeslips in the glove box that ranged from 8.40/50's to a best of 8.10, then he let me slip behind the wheel for 2 hail marys at the end of the day and i squeezed a 8.06 first and a 8.02 to end the day with some mad clutch slippin to keep it from spinning.......a 7.99 may have been in it but me and snowman were out of time, we had a long way to go and a short time to get there so we dropped that hammer down!

Trip number 2 was up to Mobiles '600 footer and we now had the 2-step hooked up (msd digi 6), PS was gone, razin curank pulley installed and a decent set of hoosier 26x10 slicks bolted on and people knew we were there for bizness!

Micheal pulls to the line for his first pass and its touching the 2-step LOW............clutch out and it jerks up and almost falls on its face! A gear miss later and its hot-lap time...........some 7.70's and frustration later and we've got the 2-step at 4500 and we're missing gears like we mean it! At least 4 passes in a row with missed shifts..............finally a *PLEASE GO IN* 3/4 shift and a 7.45 lights up, followed by a 7.44 but times up and he has to load it back up on the stretcher for the trip to walnut hill, of course the "real" men just swapped tires and headed to the house a mere 83 miles away............2 trips, 2 tracks, 2 frustrating days..............

Micheals getting a little down about the performance but i keep telling him it will run better once the DRIVER gets dialed in, then we can worry about the car but like most guys that race autos its hard to get them to understand it takes a fair amount of seat time for most people to get really "comfortable" racing a stick like you mean it! Our next outing didnt do anything to make the car/driver situation any better lol............

Outing #3 was much of the same  :chair......................Micheal pulled into PCD 1/8th. mile running late and he got his junk off the trailer, warmed up the fluids a little and jumped right into it! Big burnout and a nice 4500 2-steped launch and BAM! Wheels up (a little lol) and a broken shift handle later we are standing around going  :wtf:..........he is a cursed SOB behind the wheel of a stick but manages to struggle through the day and finally cranks out a 7.84 and a .85 (i believe) to end the day just like the other days...............crappy start and a few good passes at the end of the day............how about starting out good? Back on the stretcher and Micheal mentions when we get home it started acting "weird"...............uh-oh............it was missing and acting nutty so houston we have a problem.....

Micheal works off shore so its not always easy to get things going so it was a little while before we could fiddle with it, we thought we had it squared away when we found a ground off the harness and it *seemed* to be cured...............WRONG!

Outing #4 and Micheal called the day we were going to Mobiles 600fter and informed me it was acting weird but was bringing it anyway...........well it showed up and stumbled to a unprintable time and it was looking bleak in the pits............Juiced Coupe was there to witness this folly and we never got it figured out so BACK on the stretcher it went :bang

After posting on here for various causes me and David went over there to check it out and go up and see the renovations on our "new" home track..............a quick trip down the road (first time i rode in it running bad) and David pipes up.........

"Wow this thing feels like ass!"
"Yeah, i havent rode in it since it started this........."
"Feels like the TPS.........."
"I'm sure Micheal has one?" i replied.......

Back at Micheals super sweet mustang ranch/shop we round up a fresh TPS and it starts right up.............David and Micheal go for a rip down the road while i shell peanuts to feed to Michaels lab (she LOVES peanuts, shelled or not!)................car sounds great, spinnin and rippin down the highway but we cant get back to the track till 2013.........sssssooooooo stay tuned!

Lol...............i'm at work and to be honest i just read a epic saga of a mopar guys last 2 dragweeks so it inspired me a little :idea...................i, unfortunately love to talk and story tell about cars so i thought i'd throw a little something out there and to be honest i love reading about other peoples racing and misadventures as usually the reality is far less glamorous than the post that reads "Ran a new best, insert awesome number, and am happy!" but is far more interesting, at least to me lol.........i have one more track trip to post...................will our hero succeed in his quest for a decent day? Or will i have a aneurysm? Or will the car just say  :wtf: to both of us and terminally wound itself? Stay tuned!

I see Nate is getting itchy lol..........

I talked to Michael last night, said he had timing at 14, I laughed. I think he'll be buying a chip before the next track outing.
I thought he had 4.10's in it?
I should have the red car ready by the next track outing, should make for some good racing. ;D

Title: Re: Problownchilds junk I
Post by: Mr.Blue on February 19, 2013, 12:55:16 pm
Outing #5 at Mobiles 600fter and Micheals back off the boat and determined to get something done about these crappy track outings............gets the subframes welded on and it seems to be running great with the TPS/electrical issue resolved........of course it always "runs great" when no ones around or the titles not on the line but what the hey, i'll take his word for it.........

Checking the weather is showing for a perfect day, clear, 26% humidity and 50+ degrees outside.........D/A is about -800 below (jealous guys?!?)........so if the track is prepped decent it should roll some numbers out that would at least make me smile (Micheals never satisfied lol).........

Micheal calls to inform me he has located the stretcher and will have the patient loaded and be on his way in the morning, as usual the real men load that morning and hit the road for the 83 mile trip. Of course i arrive first and have mine ready to go when he pulls in and hem haws around getting it unloaded............

Me: Whats it gonna run?
Mike: eeeehhhh..........7.40's?
Me: It runs a .40 and just come back around and load that bitch up on the stretcher!
Mike: What do you think it should run?
Me: 7.20 at least.................depends on the track and the DRIVER............

First pass, good burnout, 4500rpm chatter, tire spin and a missed gear later the day has started............meet the new boss, same as the old boss :chair

Of course that means a hotlap and Micheal shouts out a "1.60 .60!" knowing i would want to know............read and repeat from the first pass EXCEPT no missed gear...................

7.10@86...............YOUR MY BOY BLUE!!!!!!!!

But one good pass does not a stick shift driver make in my book.........ssssooooo

A cool down later and its a 7.12@85ish followed by a string of .12/.10/.13/.15./.17 another .12.............my goodness folks i think the boy has got the hang of it! We lowered the 2-step to 4100 because the line was going away a little and the car was spinning a touch to much on the launch IMHO............best .60 was a 1.55 and yielded a 7.10 but he also ran a .10 with a 1.59 (i believe)so i'm pretty sure on a "perfect" run a 7.06/7 would pop up, he confessed to being a little distracted and maybe not seeing the shift lite from time to time  :duh.........we made 6 hits together for the crowd (who probably didnt care lol)........i mean who doesnt like 2 stick cars leaving on the 2-step? Micheals last pass was the 7.09@86.5 coupled with a 1.56 and just like that the monkey (and me) was off his back and now we can get serious about trying to find a little ET/MPH as he has about 120lbs. he can pull if he wants, a TFS track heat laying at the shop and the exhaust could be free'd up some sssooooo hopefully we can get a few things done and still get a few runs in at Atmore at the end of march and shoot for some "good" numbers this fall.....

I was just happy Micheal FINALLY had a good day in that car as i know it can be frustrating when you know what something "should" run but it doesnt, just goes to show once again how much the driver plays a roll in the clutch cars IMHO...............

Side note

One of my passes (blue coupe) Micheal heard a guy comment "Thats it? That thing was poppin, i expected more" cant please'em all lol............damn gt40 headed bcam!

When we were loading up a guy came over and said
Him "You driving that?"
Me:"Yep.......to pensacola..."
Him: "You guys raced a bunch"
Him: "Why's the slow one on the trailer?"
Me: "He's a p*ssy...........doesnt trust the car...."
Him: "LOLOLOLOLO"

Hope you guys enjoyed it...............I had a great time on all the trips so when someone makes it look easy it often times took awhile, at least it does for me! :drink

I see Nate is getting itchy lol..........

Yes, but life isn't cooperating right now.  :duh  Did take the car for a drive yesterday.  Got back and remembered David asking for the vacuum at idle ages ago.  Dug around all the house stuff in the garage that hasn't made it into the new house yet, and managed to find the vacuum gauge.  Then started looking which pipe pug I have and what fittings I have so I could take a reading since there is nowhere to get a vacuum reading in my carb.  Wife comes in and says she needs help with the kids.  That was the end of that.  :(

Him: "Why's the slow one on the trailer?"
That's funny right there. :spit:

I'm thinking Michael intends to buy the 1 3/4 BBK's and 3" Xpipe from me off of the red car, that should help over the 1 5/8" flotech longtubes he has on it now. Hopefully he'll get some good mufflers instead of the flowsmashers it has now.

I'd also like to take a quick moment and mention a big THANKS! to David for the TPS diagnosis.........it may have never run with me working on it! Hey, i'm a driver not a mechanic! :dunno

Also point out that Micheal is a great sport about all the teasing i give him and has a great sense of humor! He's also much better at completing projects that i am and i dont want anyone to think he's some kind of dummy or anything reading that bit of drivel i posted...........he did a great job in the car sunday (better than me lol) and his "missed" shift was actually the handle had worked its way loose :duh...........he still slipped it in but it was a throw away pass..........

Me or Micheal will keep this updated as the car hits the strip.....................did i mention he has a AOD coupe driver/racer (smoke) and a newly purchased 5spd. coupe DD (homewrecker)? Nevermind the procharged heap.........i'll get some info on the other cars and maybe he'll post up...........the AOD car makes me sick what it runs lightly modded :'(

Now i've done my part.................i'm ready to read about some other guys track outtings! :ban

Black GT has 31 spline trac-loc/axles
Grey AOD has stock stuff
My blue coupe has 31 spline trac-loc/aftermarket hardened street axles with c-clip elims
My blu/silv GT has the same as the coupe but with a spool
My AOD hatch has stock stuff..........

Just the basic stuff to lighten them.........no HVAC, manual steering, sound deadner, fiberglass or 4cyl. seats...a few of them have k-members etc. etc..............

Hell, I've always wondered why all of you guys cars were so heavy. My junk is ~2900# with stock K member, A arms, GT front seats, dash internals, and 60# of ballast. Still has carpet, interior/trunk panels, and power windows/locks.

Rocky - you need to use an actual scale.  You cant just guess at the weight of your car...  I have a photo somewhere of what my vert weighed stock.  I also have a photo somewhere after I took a ton of crap off and out.  The lightest its been (that I verified on a calibrated scale) with me in it was 3620#

Got bored today and drove over to the local recycle yard and weighed it. 2760# without me (175) or the nitrous bottle (25).

I did. ABC Recycling, scales calibrated daily.

Since then, I've removed the door bars, converted to coilovers, swapped to Drag lights with skinnys, and cut off a few other items that weren't necessary.

We race all most every weekend over here but I think the Northies get tired of me rubbing it in so I try to keep it down this time of year so I don't put them into a deep depression. Unfortunatley I am not racing this weekend in the "lights out race" I have a family commitment on Saturday but i will go watch tomorrow for a little while. The live feed is on now and first round of qualifying is about to start. www.motormaniatv.com

Now i've done my part.................i'm ready to read about some other guys track outtings! :ban

I'm beginning to think that we are about the only ones going. Everyone else must be snowed in. Gotta be it.

The new house and having a 3.5 year old and 5 month old is killing any chance of me doing darn near anything with the car right now.  I've got plenty more excuses.  Just let me know how many you need to get me off the hook.  :-[

Update.......Atmore outing, first pass Rodney breaks all four studs on left side.....repairs car to the side of the burnout box. I drive el gato negro (Rodney named car), but went on drag radials.....no good, best pass was an 8.02 at 85ish i believe. 60' in the 1.80's (1.89) i believe, next outing on the 9th of June we hope, and the slicks are coming....all in all....the day was a wash, lots of people, more spectators and cars in the pits than racers.....o joy. Track will hook, just need the slicks. David also had his issues.... :duh

Was that Sunday? If so, my MSD box died the same day at Leakesville. Talk about bad luck going around.

The 18th I think it was, I had a TFI module shit the bed on the way to the track. It was cutting out at the top of every gear, and just didn't have the normal pull it normally does. First pass was an 8.1@84 I think. Similar to best time I'd ran, but down on MPH, next pass was slightly worse, and next was even worse, so didn't even try anymore. Got the new module from Oreilly's, old one was still under warranty, that's number 3 I think in about 15 months. We're going to give it another try June 9th. Hoping for some high 7's out of my pig.

Just a quick update................Micheal has 4/5 "race/street" cars like me and David and doesnt get to run that much since he's off pirating most of the time but he did get back up to the track and made a few "decent" passes with this car..........7.63@87 was his best and a few high .60's low .70's but it still has some more in it if we can ever get it to the track when its prepped decent and the air is good...........these runs were made around august or so...........
