There was an incredible Black 65' running at Kennedale back in late 80s to about 1990.
That beyotch was running consistent 6 second runs and it was QUIETTTTTTTTTT.

Wouldn't be surprised if he was running a bottle, but I never, ever saw him purge...

I never got to run him either, nor did he street race it that I knew.

btw...  did someone suggest you run your links on the top to start with?
Seems your "IC" would be too high once your on the ground at ride height.  Just wondering.

Looking good!  I see you made a burn out box in front of the garage.  Nice!!!  :burnout

thanks 289nate your car is very nice, i hope to have mine that nice soon but only have a little time to work on it

It took a loooong time to get it to where it looked pretty good.  Performance is a lot more enjoyable than the looks in my opinion.  :)

thanks 289nate we did about 15 1st gear hits to get the carb closer.caltracs are planting those 20 yr old slicks hard considering it has a nitrous converter and only 411 gears.the highport heads and accufab 1 3/4 headers made a huge difference in performance.same engine with stock heads and 1 5/8 headers went 9.0 in the 1/8 mile went 6.90 on the drugs  cant wait to go to the track when it reopens

Looks very good!

I have never had good luck with cork gaskets on my v/c -- they always seem to leak after a while.  I have had to use those blue or black rubber type v/c gaskets -- they seal much better and longer for me.

That's way rich. That's around a 75-80 shot with 150 worth of fuel.

Title: Re: just my junk
Post by: al2 on July 28, 2013, 06:17:11 pm
friday night air was terrible 121 grains and a density alt 3275 managed a best of 6.73 at 102.67 new best mph reset rear susp and car worked well for the air.went back sat and they had a street war race and to many people had street tires . the air was alot better but track sucked best et was 6.89 at 101.56. 60ft was slow 1.61 spun bad.tried the bigger 275 drag radials but by then no one with any power was getting down the track.so we loaded and watched and drank beer.on drag radials went 7.37 at 105.17 with a 2.41 60 ft lol. can not wait to try drag radials on a good track now we are making some power

Have not figured out how to post a video off my iPhone 5.

I can relate.  I haven't figured out how to post my GoPro videos.  I think I'll try posting them to YouTube first.

With an iPhone if you have the TapaTalk app it makes it very easy to upload pics/video from your phone.  I use it on my iPhone and iPad to simplify doing that.

Got to go to Redline Raceway yesterday. Ran consistent low 6.40s then on the last pass pulled out a 6.38@104.37 with a 1.35 sixty. New personal best on a marginal track all though air was really good. On that last pass it carried the wheels all most to the sixty it sure gathered a crowd after that pass.

That reminds me of a beloved former member here who had a quote in his signature that read something like "all of the hype of 3 inch engines" but hasn't seen any at the track to back up their claims -- it looks like we have a winner here ...

Thanks Robert but my junk isn't up to Rich's stuff but like the comparison. We have a d1 block and a standard 2m crank we have been talking about building with some good rods and pistons   To see what we can get out of a 3" motor. Would like to post some video's but have not figured it out.

While at the Motorplex we were running 1/8 mile car just wouldn't run better than 6.60s. So I got out in the shop last night and ran a compression test all cyl happy and within 5llbs of old readings. But while hooking up starter button to starter relay nut on relay was about to fall off. Ignition box, nitrous, alternator etc get power from there. Hope cars power is back. Will test soon.

We had that problem once or twice on a few of our cars it usually was the Nitrous solenoid not opening all the way and was caused by over pressurized or leaving the bottle on instead of purging it after every pass.

Found that nut loose on starter solenoid that I get the power for my nitrous and ign box. But I was thinking on the same lines as you Bam. I ordered a rebuild kit for our nitrous solenoid , filters, a spare solenoid and a bunch of shirts from Steve Johnson last Wednesday   Will be here tomorrow. Thanks it makes me think I'm going in the right direction.

Hope so Nate we lost 2 tenths last time out. Ran a comp check every thing good. But found the nut loose on the starter solenoid. Slicks maybe going away. We have been looking at going to a 9" rim from the 8".  Will be looking this week for the correct offset and deciding if I want to go to a 28x10.5.

Took car out this time hope we found the problem. Trans shifting really slow on the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift. Takes for ever to go to reverse. Dropped pan nothing in pan fluid smells ok. Went on and pulled it out. Trans has over 100 passes 6.38- 6.60. It was built in the late 80s and ran around 50 passes and a little street driving.  Can't hardly get any thing to last any more lol. Goes to Jay Broader Monday for freshening and upgrades

Talked to Jay at broader transmissions trans really worn and old school will be upgrading trans to his 1000hp model with trans brake. He will also be building a new converter that will be a lot tighter and set up for this combo. Old converter was 25 yrs old time for upgrade. Can't wait to get back to the track and beat on it.

The heat keeps me out of the garage often.  If I don't open up the door in the morning, it's nearly unbearable in there by mid afternoon.  I have to bite the bullet and do something about it.  Seal the gaps and put a swamp cooler or ductless HVAC unit in there.  :hmmmm:

Went to track today first pass on motor to make sure I can shift a reverse pattern shifter . Knew it was going to be bad it will barely spin tires in burnout. Running 26 deg total timing and nitrous NGK 9 plugs. 1/8 mile 11.51 @ 86 mph with a killer 3.52 sixty. Back to the truck install bottle new plugs flow fuel and pull to line still have trouble with burn out 6.68 @ 104 with a 1.58 sixty check plugs has too much timing and looks lean add 1/2 lb of fuel and pull 2 deg 6.61 @ 105 with a 1.50 sixty. Pull the new plug timing looks good but still lean  got to looking oops someone didn't plug off vacuum port to trans modulator now it has a brake.  Added back timing took the 1/2 lb of fuel back out and 4 more new plugs and pulled to the line someone oiled track . Went and loaded up . Converter is really tight got to make some more power or loosen it up. But great to be back at the track.

Thanks Nate. We are not bracket racers but we just kept going rounds. We had a lot of fun but I like to mess with the car every rnd trying to make it go quicker instead of trying to go the same every rnd. We got to run the full quarter during time trials my junk want make it but to 1000ft but letting off around 1000ft it ran a 10.50.

Thanks Nate. We are not bracket racers but we just kept going rounds. We had a lot of fun but I like to mess with the car every rnd trying to make it go quicker instead of trying to go the same every rnd.

I certainly understand.  I am there for the adrenaline speed rush and do what I can during time shots to make the car faster.  Once we get to the qualifying round I pretty much am a hands off kind of guy, just trying to keep the slicks hooking.  I normally dial hard and if I get the chance to I run it out against a close competitor I will.  On the other hand if I am ahead I will leave off the throttle a time or too to take the win.  At least in that case I know I will get another chance to go fast.

You two just made bracket racing sound more exciting than I perceived it to be.  I get my kicks out of running better than the last time out and never looked at bracket racing as being for me since I'm far from having things ironed out at the drag strip.

JayH we changed converters from what had to another 9.5 " it stalls on brake to about 2800. I have the one that only stalled to 1800 back to converter guy. I could have added a couple degrees of timing and probably be back to 6.40s but we didn't have time to tow and mess with. So I decided to just watch the weather and dial the best I could.

Car runs awesome!

Just don't expect too much from that Mexican block...  It's no more than an early model block with non tapered caps.  It is by no means a "race" block.  If you plan on heavy nitrous, a Dart block is in your future.  Since your car has the engine room, I'd strongly consider a 351W based engine for a replacement...  especially if you want to stay "stock block"...  as the 351W block is FAR stronger than any factory 302 unit.

Good Luck!

Title: Re: just my junk
Post by: al2 on October 08, 2014, 08:50:41 am
Just going to put a cheap short together while I gather parts for a heavy nitrous motor. My short in my car is really old and worn. That way I can keep running while I gather stuff and not be in a hurry. I think a fresh short with lighter Pistons and better rods and a new cam can get me to 6.20s.

Title: Re: just my junk
Post by: scienceguy on October 08, 2014, 09:17:11 am
I also drilled/tapped my 302 blocks for 351W head bolts. Got tired of changing head gaskets! (this was before loc-wire and MLS head gaskets were available) I found that the bigger head bolts and the 1011 head gaskets did the trick. Just be sure to get the block power honed, as torque goes up from 80 to a max of 135ft-lbs! lol I torque mine to 115 bottom row and 125 top. ARP main studs are also mandatory. And don't expect to have a leak free 2-piece rear main seal on a stock block nitroused 289/302. lol

To do the 1/2" 351W head bolt conversion... Use a 289/302 head with 7/16" head bolt holes as a guide to drill the block 27/64" for the 1/2" coarse tap. Remove head, clean out cuttings, and install head with 1/2" holes as a guide to tap the threads straight. You'll need an extra long tap available from various suppliers such as Travers Tool, MSC direct, etc.

The block will handle more max power at the stock stroke than with a stroke crank... as the stroker crank puts more stress on the block. I'd be really careful how hard I sprayed a 347. I've been very careful, but very fortunate with these 306's... The current one is putting down close to 650hp with the 200hp plate. With power adders, you're going to be pushing the limits of the block, anyway... No real need for a stroker. It just weakens things. lol

Good Luck!

All ready have head studs so we wlll stay with them. Years ago we had head gasket issues fixed problem with new bolts never had a problem since. When we put the high ports on it went with studs over a 100 65f 82n passes and no problems. Will be a 3" stroke and never had an oil leak after installing the vacuum pump. But thanks for the ideas.

You can get either thin or thick sleeves.  I believe the common thick ones are 1/8".
Thick ones are generally used when something has punched a hole in the cylinder, and the thinner ones are generally preferred for more minor stuff, as they leave a lot more of the supporting original bore material.

Yea Mike these are the thin ones . There used to be several rebuilders that used them around here but have never seen them in every cylinder.

Now just needing some good weather on a weekend where we can do some testing. At the end of last year we had lost some ET and 4 mph. The last time out I added 5 extra gallons of gas to the rear tank. Our sixty came back to a 1.39 and we got back to a 6.46. So I think our tires are just gone. We also have a better converter to try. Maybe that will help our mph along with the taller tires.

Nice job Man! :rock

You really know how to get those little 3" motors hauling ass! :)

Can't wait to see some pics of the car with the new tires on it.I'm looking at getting some 27-10.5-15 ET Streets on the back of mine, but I may just go with what you've got.

Not only does your car haul ass like the devil is chasing it,you TOTALLY nailed the stance. That is one hard runnin',tough lookin' Mustang,Brother! :clap

Thanks. Got the Hoosier 10x28 slicks installed . There is plenty of clearance . Will be able to do a 9" rim upgrade they are on 8" now. I am pretty sure 10.5x28 will fit on a 9" rim with a little massaging   But that will come latter ready to go to the track now.

Installed new trans brake button on steering wheel hope it makes my reaction times quicker. Old button was on shifter had to be carefull or would go straight to 2nd.

Took the 68 to the track today with the new slicks and trans brake button ,I also changed tune to a 60f 76n from a 65f 82n and bolted the wheelchair battery in back for the heater cooler which added 35 lbs .car slowed to 6.60s but all reaction times started with a .0 think I'm ready to try some 6.60 index races.

Bam the tires worked great . With the smaller tune and larger new tires it's really easy to drive now. We are running a muscle car series they have around here to learn how to bracket race then we will try some index racing. We will try to go to a TNT and put the larger tune in and see what happens. I think we will get a new PB. I still  have the Broader torque convertor to try just need to take time and install it.

Bam last three reaction times were .085 , .055 , and .025 in that order. As long as the first number is a zero I'm happy

Went to the track today 1st pass .045 reaction time 2nd .012 time to race 3rd -.045 oops I'm out. Car ran 6.84, 6.82 then 6.82. We were at the Motorplex and they had the scales on. Car weighed 3170 lbs. that's with the wheel chair battery, 15lb nitrous bottle, extra gas where I wouldn't have to fill every pass and my big ass in it.  I pulled a bunch of jet out to make it more consistent for bracket racing. Normally we run the car with the 10lb bottle, pull out the wheel chair battery before the pass, run about 4 gallons lees gas in it and my buddy drives 150lbs when we are trying to go as fast as we can.   If we can catch a slick tire only day at the track I will put the man jets back in and run less gas and pull the wheel chair battery and let her eat with the new tires.

Went to the track last night 107 grains of water ,da3957, temp 95. First hit on the small tune 6.82@101 picked up 3mph from old converter. Went back installed old 65f 80n tune set timing at 19 deg total super safe. Ran a 6.52@104. Track was so crowed we decided to call it a night. After looking at plugs pretty sure I could have added 2 degrees timing and my sixty would have been back. Car was lazy off the line. Oh well new motor should be ready in about 3 weeks.

Nitrous likes bigger heads than n/a, as there is a lot more flowing through there...  so with a 300hp shot and some decent compression, it should be fine.  Plus, if you ever decide to do a 351W based engine, you'll already have some decent heads for it.  ;)

I copied a lot of the way the Bennet crate 363 engine were built. They have big heads and run really well. I thought most every one on here pushed big heads. Gave my engine builder choise of 225HP or 240HP. He picked 240HP. Guess we will see how it does. Just didn't want to start over if I decide I want to spray a lot more.

I've always respected largish heads vs status quo.
I'd even suggest c3/d3 heads to you if you had not already bought the 240s...
I believe you're "ahead" with your plan so far.

What do you have for an intake manifold?  Mike Curcio at MCRP REALLY knows his way around an 8.2" Super Victor.  I had him do one, and that sucker is MUCH lighter than a stock one!  He already knows two places where it will break through during the porting process, and epoxies them.  TEA farms out their intakes to him.  If you want an intake that will do the heads justice, he's the man to turn to.

Good Luck!

Title: Re: just my junk
Post by: scienceguy on September 21, 2015, 10:22:55 am
Some pics of the intake on this thread.  If you're going to run the 240's...  you really need an intake to do them justice...  else you've wasted your money on the killer heads.  If you're using a nitrous PLATE, the big intake will really come in handy, as the intake will also have to carry the nitrous.  ;)

Good Luck!

Definitely!  But, I would still STRONGLY consider the intake...  especially with the plate.
Wish you were closer...  I would let you use mine until I need it!   ;D

But, it will still run good, even with a port matched Super Victor...  which is what I assume you are using.

Harmonic balancer coming. ATI Super Dampner

Title: Re: just my junk
Post by: scienceguy on September 29, 2015, 07:41:11 am
Cool!  I just checked, and the MSD #8640 crank trigger WILL work with a 3-bolt ATI dampner...  if that's what you got for the early car.  There are also 3 different timing positions timing marks on SBF's.  Make sure you got the dampner that matches to what your car has.  One more thing...  ATI dampners generally come too tight, and need to be honed to fit the crank.  This requires a Sunned type rod hone with a fairly small mandrel designed to work with a keyway.

Been through all this!  Good Luck!

Need to rebuild the pressure plate, get a new clutch disk, put the big in/out toploader together...  and figure out if I'm going to have the gears face plated, upgrade to 35 spline axles, and it probably needs a mini-tub to make use of the power.  Oh, the roll bar etc will also need updated to run in the 9 sec zone.

Combine that with the fact that I'm a single parent without a lot of time and cash to burn...  (kid in sports after school)  and it becomes easy to see why I'll run the current engine until it blows!  lol

Right now, I change the oil once a year, empty bottle after bottle of nitrous through it without checking a plug, and barely do any maintenance.  As it sits, the car is EASY and RELIABLE...  which counts for a lot!  :)

Good luck with the new engine!!!

Don't no if it will run 9s. I was thinking 8s.

It will be somewhere in the 9's.  Will have 100hp or so more than what I have now, which will definitely put it securely in the 9's, but with the weight, tires, and semi mild aspect of the build, it's not going to be THAT quick.  Now, if Dennis got serious with his big 434, put it on a little bit of a diet and added the bottle...  HE could be a contender for the 8 second club!

Looking forward to seeing how YOUR car runs with the new motorvation!  :)

Well got Pro System carb installed, adj floats has leak on front accelerator pump, pull carb change accelerator pump and tighten all screws. Starts quick but smells really rich. Checked new set of plugs after idling around 5 minutes. Plugs black.  Drilled idle air jets , changed high speed jets ,installed a 5cc accelerator pump in the rear ,had one in the front ,after changing squirters multiple times. Will come up on brake and a 30 ft hit feels good. All changes were done one at a time. Not real impressed with this carb but it's what I got. Maybe et will make me feel better. Now we need some warmer weather.

Messed with it a little more today. Blocked power valve to see if it cleaned it up more. Added 6 jet size the best it's been by far. Needs to go to track and see what it will do. Before blocking pv while at idle would slowly idle down til it dies. Now will idle fine and plugs are cleaning up. Will order some more n/a plugs have gone through 4 sets getting carb dialed in. After I get plugs looking good will go back to a pv.

One more shot at this carb dropped jetting to 79 square another new set of plugs. Starts now really quick went straight to an idle. Comes up on the brake clean. Shame it's to wet to get it out of the shop.

Nope just reading plugs and making 60ft hits, it is just now close enough to tell any thing with a a/f meter. it close enough to go make an 1/8 mile pass now

Thanks Dennis going to be in the 60s and sun shining. Have some new slicks, adjusted the valves and messed with the squatters some more. Has instant throttle response now. And now we are going to introduce new power plant to nitrous. This car has always responded well to nitrous. Our last outing had 1.85 sixty. Even on this small hit I am hoping for 1.30s.

Well I was left alone un attended to long   Went on an ordered a Christmas present to myself. New headers from CPR 1 7/8" tubes with 3 1/2" collectors. Sure hope they fit better than my current junk accufabs. They took about 12 hrs of cutting bending to make fit.

Very nice late Christmas present!   :ban

Hmmmmmmm, those look familiar.  Disregarding the flanges, the resemblance is, should I say, "uncanny" . . . . . .

Accufab:

1 7/8" tubes. 3 1/2" collectors. Sure looks like the same builder to me. Will take some picture like yours and post when I get to the shop. Sur hope they fit without massaging. Would like to coat them

Dennis when taking old header off when car is not on a lift we had to jack car really high. I thought maybe we could remove collectors and give more room. So far dealing with CPR was a good experience. Guess it depends what you have built ? They even called and made sure I received them .

With your 8.2 motor the removable collector should help installation.  I think I was going to have issues, no matter what, installing on my wider/taller motor.  Can't wait to see some installation pics as I am curious about how yours fit vs mine

Also curious how much a difference they will make on your car with the big tubes and collectors.

Nice headers. The headers are not the same from cpr and accufab. I was in Gardinia is southern cal in july and stopped by cpr. Great guy for the most part. He took me around the shop for a tour. He doesn't build headers anymore. He farms them out to a guy named Mark north of his shop. He told me it was a bitch as even the fox body with different k members and motor mounts fitment are different. There was no pleasing everyone for a mere hundred dollar profit.

Went to the track yesterday. Only made one pass before a bad wreck shut the track down. Thankfully driver is ok. Went on top of concrete barrier and took out timing system. The only pass I made the timing box did not pull timing. Was on a mild tune and aborted pass. Didn't nip any plugs but heat mark was pass the bend. Will leak test and run compression test next weekend. Hope to get back out before its to cold.

Robert it didn't feel right so I shut it off. Have not had time to check it out but should be fine. Usually you have to burn a strap off to hurt any thing. Did not show any detonation just heat past the bend of the electrode. Hope to check it out after we eat turkey Thursday.

On the return line, did you use a dip tube or just a open bulkhead?

I talked to MagnaFuel about it, and they said that both setups can have problems when used with a small tank. They suggested a short tube (1/2 tank) with a slight angle away from the sump.

They are about 1/2" higher than the huge cast aluminum trans pan. Always forget how big that c6 is. At least it bullet proof. Got all the stuff to rewire fuel pump, water pump, electric fans, trans brake, and nitrous system. Also need to install the Leash controller. That's next. Also may order an aluminum radiator. Finally going to send the intake ou for gasket match and port. Then we wil work up a 300 hp tune.

It's one I have had, it came out of my 95 Gt street car. We put new bearings in it last year and was letting a friend use for the year. I got back from him a couple months ago and put brand new AFR heads on it. The engine is a World block with 4.125 probe flat top pistons, H beam rods, Scat 3.4 stroke crank, Super Victor, Quick Fuel 750 E85 carb, Kooks 2 inch headers and AFR 220s I  bought from Woody with a small solid roller I bought used from a member here.

New radiator is not as wide as old radiator but twice as thick. Should still lose 40lbs on the front end. Jack was looking at the package and read cools 350 hp. I told him that's fine our rings ar only gapped to spray 325 to 350 hp.

Finally got to go work on finishing the headers right fit perfect . Left side needed a little massaging. Had one tube touching oil pan and one hitting block. Then collector was touching shift lever . Got every thing clearances and car back together. Since I removed most of the add on wiring. I ran a few wires to get trans brake ,fan, water pump, and fuel pump up and running . Started and let warm up. This converter only will go to 3800 on the brake still pretty tight but looser than the last one. Will start on wiring this week.

Isn't header tube work fun?  Actually I kind of enjoyed doing it once I got over the initial fear.  Ended up doing it in the off time between 2 different race seasons and they now fit great except for plug access to #8.  The only problem there is that its the only plug that I can't use a ratchet on for a quick plug swaps.  LOL

Keep at it Bam and you'll be very pleased with the end results.   :party

Dennis they really fit well now . All spark plugs will come out with electric ratchet . All in al fit was much better than original accufabs 1 3/4" headers that had around 20 hrs installing. Right side fit with zero modification. Left only about 3 hrs massaging. Only draw back was old headers would come on and off without moving engine. These engine has to be out headers laid in then engine installed. Starter still ok to get off and on.

In essence...  You removed a passenger Al.   Lol
Hope you get some worthy results for your effort.  Looks good too!

How do you like the leash controller so far?

Bam just got it installed. Car has been down several months. Right now tracks are closed for another month. All though some times if weather is good they may open. Nothing you can count on. Installed Leash progressive, his nitrous board and his 6 relay board. Trying to borrow a alignment machine to do a alignment this week. Will be ready to test if any tracks open.

I'm going to spring for some new headers soon.  I may go the same route as you.  Few companies have options for high ports.

Save me some reading; is your block still 8.2" or did you go bigger?

8.2 deck shp dart with TEA 240 highports. Headers were CPR headers. They all most looked identical to Dennis's Accufabs. Headers are 1 7/8" tubes with 3 1/2" collectors..right side fit perfect ,right side little massaging.

Thanks for the info.  I didn't see any coating options.  Did you have your coated?

I wouldn't have any big tube header coated until after they were checked for fit in the car.

What Dennis said. Mine were heated and slightly bent in several places. They are ready to coat now but I want to test. Next time I have engine out we will coat.

Rear seat has been out since we installed roll cage. After going to 3 gallon tank in truck decided we better close trunk off. Cut, bent and installed some aluminum today.

Good Move Bob!

If the aluminum is thick/secure enough it can also help greatly to prevent torsional twist.  For that reason I'd add more rivets around the perimeter.

Dennis I took the pictures before we were finished. Has more rivets. Car has some frame connectors we made 25 years ago. Way over kill in strength . We also have the 10 point cage tied into them. Car is so rigid when I use my 3 ton floor jack on the frame rail right behind the frt tire the whole car will come off the ground. We are looking to add some more bars to tie in frt towers and lower bars that run from rear hoop to frt hoop. The frt engine plate also helped a lot with making the frt a lot more rigid. Thanks for the input.

Today we addressed the problem of the seat siting to high. When I am in the seat with a helmet on my helmet is above the bottom of the roll cage about a 1/2". So we're going to lower seat. So we cut upper seat mout out and lowered 1" and welded back.

Took the 68 out last Saturday for a TNT got there unloaded . Went to warm car up there was a bind in the steering. Looks like we pried to hard on steering shaft bending header. Will measure sector shaft Saturday and order box and coupler.

Got a chance to work on the 68 today. Checked out steering gear box it's ok but steering shaft at rag joint still rubbing. Removed steering column and rag joint ,going to eleminate rag joint and install coupler knuckle. N/A tune with new larger headers is rich at idle. Drilled air idle jets another .003. Idles a lot better now like it use to.

Took the 68 to the track last week made a test hit 65f 80n running 19 deg total timing. Pulled car to starting line and back. Started progressive at 50% to 100% in 1 second. Left like a stocker with a 1.49 sixty and ran a 6.17@115 mph. 9.5" converter still to tight. Should have had progressive at 100% at release of trans brake. But the good news is made a pass with no problems like before. I believe problem was the wot switch. After pass we pulled plugs and got a good reading. Plugs had slight fuel mark and still no sign of heat on strap. Wanted to start adding a little timing but track was full of street cars so track was marginal.
