My brother has a 94 lightning and wants to rebuild the engine.  It currently has the stock shortblock with a set of 200cc world heads, custom Jay Allen cam, 1.7rr, and some exhaust work.  He recently lost a head gasket, and now wants to totally redo the engine.  I suggested that he may look into a stroker, since his heavy truck could benefit from the extra torque.  He wants to keep it NA, and he drives the truck everywhere.

My father on the other hand is dead set against a stroker kit, as he feels it isnt the thing for a street truck(cooling issues, engine wear, dependablility).  I was looking at a 408-427 short block from woody for this project, a mass air conversion, and some other extras.

What is the right thing to do?  I always look to add power when I need to fix things.  Can a 408-427 be made to deal with street use??

I have yet to see a reason why this is such a problem, or a perceived problem by many people.

Ted:

Do a 408 or a 418.
Use the iron Dart heads.  With some bowl blending they are not too bad at all.
GT-40 lower.
Downs Ford box upper.
90mm TB

Not to be rude, but your father is not accurate on this.

Let me know how I can help.

Hi mean88, hope you don't mind me joining in here.

Woody this is something I have a question about also as I have a stroker post floating around here abouts. I understand from info on this site that that a shorter rod will provide better acceleration but for regular street use does the extra rod angularity of the shorter rod cause premature bore/ring wear?

Sorry if this has been raised before, I'm just looking at engine longevity here.

Thanks
Darren

Not Woody, but this was discussed in great length in the Rumors & Myth Section.

To cut to the chase, NO.  Its fine.

A 400cid SBC from the FACTORY was 1.484.  You NEVER hear a 400 Chev guy complaining about *rod angle*???????  Huh?

 Good Luck!

And Ted, thanks for bringing this one up.
