I can't believe that I just read all 6 pages of this "famous" thread
I'm gonna make a short comment:
I have done the "old school" carb building, and there is nothing wrong with that.
I have also bought a Pro Systems carb, and can say that I took it apart before I ever strapped it on my car, just to see how close it was to what I thought it should be.
I can tell you that I was thoroughly impressed.
I see people on here push custom carbs and custom cams, and while I see nothing wrong with a product bought with someone else's experience...I also don't see anything wrong with a OTS carb, or a OTS cam.
The moral of my comments are that even though some people think that Tater is wrong pushing his "old school" ways....those same people are guilty for pushing their "store bought" ways.
Ok, I'm getting off my
now.

Aint done yet????
I think that the idea was that you can do what ever you want.. the faster more consistant cars are with a good tune and build, and not every one has the experiance or knowledge ( and that is largly do to where you live).. Bolting on the carb and intake is
TODAY,
cheaper than all the inj computer sofwear and knowledge on how to make the sucker work, and after you do the carb and mainfold.. you can not get the performance others are getting... then the system sux and back to FI the guys goes.. back in the day, when there were only carbs.. WE had to learn.. experiment.. test and then do it all over again!! and most of us did it at the Sat nite Test and tune on the strip!! Yes.. this is now called Old school... it isnt !! It is just experiance!! Knowledge hammered into us by having our ass kicked!! When I do an engine for some one.. and it is a carb, I will degree in the cam, set it where I feel the guy is going to drive, and mod the carb a little, secondary springs , accel pump cam.. and when the guy gets it back.. it is rocking, and I dont charge extra either, cause it is MY rep out there, and a good rep is KING!! POOR, but KING!! !! Is tater smug?? wise ass?? looking down on people?? Some think so, others know it is Confidance in what he knows!! I know I come off that way also!! Dont slam a guy for the WAY he says something , but on WHAT he says..cool??
Just me............................................
Thumper
FTW.. when I was in the Navy it was FTN, then when in Viet Nam, the Army guys tried to copy us in the Navy!! Dummies.. they spelt it FTA !! Ok old time joke!! It took weeks till I figured what they had done.......... LOL

WOW, this is like one of those threads I read over at the stangnet.
All talk, no real help or learning going on here! Lets EDUCATE people not tell them why one way is better then the other.
Lets face it, not everyone wants to learn. But, at least put it out there and let the ones that do, learn how to!
I want a damn carburator tuning tech post now damn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
How do you tune a carb. You guys talking about how much more respect you have for those people are the ones not passing on that knowledge you learned.
You learned from someone, why can't we?

I would love to learn how to tune my carb.
Maybe Tater or Thumper or any other guys that know their stuff could do like a "carbs 101" for some of us that would like to learn.

I learned how to tune and modify a carb in my old Pontiac days, the biggest help and best resource I ever found was Car Craft magazines. Back in the day they had a "holley tune" this or Quadrajet how tos every other month.
They still have them no and again.
You learn by trial and error - what works on one guys car may not work on yours. It takes time to master, and be skeptical about anyone who calls themselves master anything!
The best way to do some reading on the subject and dig in at the track where you can really test your theories.

Its funny how many of these high powered 3" stroke motors are
talked
about, but very rarely happen to make it to the strip and back up all the hype.

Wait a minute here......Just because someone buys a custom carb
DOES NOT
mean its not gonna need adjustments when the weather calls for it. I happen to have a custom carb and I have to make adjustments all the time....so that theory is down the toilet.
What you do get with a custom carb, what you get is a very close starting point, and a carb that has a fuel curve thats calibrated/tailored for your power level/rpm range. Its flowed and tested before its shipped out and even for the experienced carb tuner its just the best way to go.
Heres my take on it....I want the best parts available for my combination. I bust my ass to make the money to pay for these parts and the service that goes with them. If I get looked at as a "checkbook Racer" or having a car full of "Store bought" stuff then so be it.

100% ... IMO
On a side note, if your track is open on Wed nights... that'd probably be the cheapest.

This is exactly what I have been trying to say....
Summit HP 950---$689.95..
Pro Systems--
Same carb totally set up for you by an expert for "your" combo--$690
It's not like your even saving any money buying an off the shelf unit.

Summit HP950---$699.95... wait, plus $10.00 handling fee.
BUT ladies and gentlemen, you also get with this brand new carburetor... a phone technician who did not build this unit, but will answer your questions as best they can from a FAQ sheet.
On the flipside, Fiddie does make a strong point and I for one will do my best to answer any questions he (any) may have on Holley, Mikuni, Kihein or QJet carbs.

347ho I don't get you at all. It seems like you want the last word everytime. I don't know if you were trying to piss me off at how you worded your post but you found the right button. It seems some of you have issues with tater who try's to help anyone he can to hell with that that's bs. I think most of those people probly never talked to him bs'd with him. Maybe if these people got their heads outta their ass's and stopped and talked with some of us their opinions might be different.

Ok....for the Non-Believers.....Here's a pic of my Current carb set-up. It's a TRC "Tater Racing Carb" custom carb and a really trick/neat piece!!.....I was hoping this fucking Thread would Die but it seems to always come back to life! It's a $150 QuickFuel baseplate,$100 set of billet Q-Fuel metering bodies, a $70 used Pro-Form main body and a set of $80 new Holley Bowels. With the nunerous AED leftover carb rebuild sets in-stock I built/re-built the carb....total outlay on it is just over $400. A far Cry from the spec almost $700 custom built carbs yal listed. Yeah....almost $300 can buy alot of gaskets, jets, power valves, etc.....wish this Thread would DIE...along with a few other "things!"....
