Spool or no spool?
«
on:
March 23, 2007, 11:35:50 pm »
I've been thinking of going with a spool for my car but i'm getting conflicting stories on how bad it will be on the street. By street I dont mean going for groceries, just local cruises and some local straight aways for fun, what do you guys think?

It's not very fun on the street... and with the uneven traction on "street" roads, it will get away from you very quickly when you get too comfortable.

with the $ of spools and the $ for a good limited or locker its hard not to go with a spool but youve got to ask your self how much strip will it REALLY see..... if youre at the track every weekend and youre on the street maye once a month then i would say spool..... BUT.... if its a "street" car and you take it to the track once in a while then i would go with something like a "Auburn Pro" or a "Detroit Locker".
friend of mine has had a Auburn Pro in his car for 4 years and has NEVER had a bit of problem, its tuff as nails!!!.

I have had a Moser 33 spline full spool in my 79 for years. It drives pretty good on the street and I haven't had any issues with it. Just use your Head and don't drive it on wet roads or try to be Joe Road Racer. I have a hard time believing the "horror stories" that you read about when I've ran a couple cars on the street/strip with mini-spools and full spools with no problems.....

I run a mini spool in my car with no issues at all. I street drive my car alot and it's not bad at all honestly. It takes a little getting used to but I don't mind it.

some "problems" can be fixed with air pressure. A little more air on the street & dry conditions. It also solves the chirping going in and out of parking spaces. Make wide U turns, watch it in the rain & snow, reduced air pressure helps in wet conditions also. I run a strange spool on my Jeep it has 35" tires. I drive it almost everyday & have the same set of tires going on 3 years with 31K miles on them

my opion was that if it was a track car: spool, if it was a street car: any type of normal differential.

IMHO....I guess it all depends on what a person is willing to deal with on a street/strip type car as far as being streetable and doable. What one person thinks is a decent combo might differ for another person. I just try to post what I've used in the past and had or didn't have "issues" with.

Thanks for the input.....my car is definitely not a daily driver. I will drive it to local cruises and trailer it to the track.........it definitely won't see any rain or snow, it will probably become a drag only car eventually.......................

Did you order the spool yet, the only time I EVER could tell that there was a spool in the car was when I had to push the car and turn, thats it. Buy it you will be glad you did!!

I've been really busy lately, but i'm finally going to order the spool, axles, c-clip elims, and probably 4:30's.........everything from Strange except the gears from Ford Racing.........What about a rear end support cover do I need one?

I agree with Thumper and the others that are running a spool. I have one in my car. It gets run alot on the street. No probs at all. Drive it with respect and you will be good to go.
