Yeah, every time I look at the bottom end of a 302 with its I-beam rails for main webbing...I think of that boss 302 block with its straight walls for the mains lol.

chute, wheelie bars, pro stock style scoop and a stock block????  at any rate that shit gets dangerous trying to go single digits with a weak block like that. IMO.

I believe that is how the motor is mounted to the frame.  I'm thinking circle track cars are this way to incorporate ridgidity for the front end.  But I'm guessing here because this is definitely not a circle track car

I could be wrong tho...

i have 1 question whats on the front of the timing cover?

It's a front motor or 'block' plate.  They are made of aluminum or steel and as was stated it's used to positively mount the motor to the frame.  It installs between the water pump and timing cover.  There are also rear plates that install between the bell housing and the block.  Same deal.  This method of mounting the motor is useful for a LOT of things...mainly for aligning the motor wherever the hell you want it lol.  Want to drop it 4"?  Cut your plate so the mounts contact the frame higher.  Want to center the block side to side (most vehicles are offset), or use the weight of the motor to make up for the weight of the driver?  Well there you have it.  You can also move the motor back as far as possible using this method as well.  The plate mounts to L brackets on the frame rails.  You can see where this would be beneficial in drag, road, or circle track racing applications.  As was also stated, it seriously adds rigidity to your frame.

By the way, you can buy these for a fox body 302 application 347HO...not sure if you knew that but it could help with your engine setback deal etc.

Hey thanks IsBad for the tip!
Yeah, the guy pushing me into moving my motor back showed me his car with that style setup.  His is an F1 or Atlantic class car...  but he's been taking time to show n tell me the most popular methods that work and perform.

It just seems like a hell of a lot er fabrication and re-fabricating to move it back 3-5 inches.
