Well, to bring every one up to date, earlier this summer I swapped in an 83 5.0 and my rebuilt C4 from a 67 merc comet.
I had the car running earlier, and it seems to make plenty of power. It will shift into reverse, but when I try to put it in forward, nothing happens.

So, out comes the trans, back to the experienced builder, with the above story. He goes thru it and says the only think he see's wrong is forward apply clutch "O" ring is old and worn. Nothing else inside is wrong.
New "O" ring, back in car, car running tonight. Run the car to normal operating temperature, no weird noises, other than it has sat for so long with out running.
Same story, goes into reverse, but no forward. Now,
Before I go buy a new valve body for it, do you think a totally wrong band adjustment could cause all of this headache??

check all of the easy stuff first , fluid level ,shift linkage, engine RPM ,converter stall speed, ect. If all of these things are ok, then check the following: pressure regulator , valve body , front pump  or you have a hydraulic system leackage. I will send some pics on how to air check and what to lok for later  let me know if this helps.....

Fluid is full, linkage seems adjusted properly, (only starts in park, and all the detents seem to be right).
I put in a TCI converter, 'better than stock' planning on motor upgrades later. Revved the motor to 1500-2K easily, no change in 'drive' gear reaction.
The pressure regulator is on the very end of the trans, right?

I'm leaving for Iraq now in less than a week, I don't have time for this particular headache!!!

I talked to my builder, he said he did the air checks before he reassembled the trans. I'm going to try and install the original valve body from the replaced trans and see if it works.

It could be that there is just so much trans gel in it that the pathways haven't opened up yet......
If that doesn't do it, then it will wait until I get back in July....

What happens when you place it in "L" and bring it back to "D"?

It sounds like a shot in the dark to me. What you have is a blown out seal , broke sealing ring around the front pump or a worn out front pump. I have seen this one other thing happen and your forward drum /0r clutch pack has to much clearance . it will air check ok and work maybe one or two times and then nothing. This clutch drum works in all forward gears . Hope this helps...

Success! I changed out the valve body, and it wants to turn the tires with authority while in the air. I still have some timing and carb adjustments on the combo, but this is a big step forward!!
